Japanese typing test

This is a plain Japanese typing test. Pick 30 or 60 seconds, choose whether you want single station names or full announcement sentences, and start typing — the clock starts on your first keystroke, not on a button.

Romaji mode shows the romanised spelling and fills it in letter by letter, so it works with no Japanese knowledge at all. Kana mode is typed on the same keyboard with the same romaji, but the display fills in kana as each mora completes, which is how you learn to read what you are typing.

Every spelling the game accepts is accepted here: shi or si, tsu or tu, sha or sya. A wrong key is simply refused rather than inserted, so you never need to backspace to recover — though backspace works if you want it.

Switch on Voice and every item is read aloud as it reaches the board: station names in the same announcement voice the game uses, and each announcement as a recording of its own. Hearing a name while you type it is how the sound and the spelling start to stick, and the speaker on the board replays the current one whenever you want it again. The switch is the same one as the game’s station announcements, so it follows you between the two.

CPM is correct characters divided by elapsed minutes. WPM is that divided by five, the standard convention that treats five characters as one word — so a Japanese typing score here is comparable to an English one.

Accuracy is correct keystrokes over total keystrokes. Backspaces are not counted against you; rejected keys are. The same functions compute the numbers on this page, in the station-name game and on the leaderboards, so a WPM means the same thing everywhere on the site.
