Overview

The Musashino Line (JM) traces a half-orbit around the outskirts of Tokyo, from Fuchu-Hommachi through southern Saitama to Nishi-Funabashi in Chiba across 26 stations. It was built as a freight bypass around the city centre, with passenger service added later — which is why freight trains are a common sight along it. Orange is its identity colour.

Along the route

From Fuchu-Hommachi it runs through Nishi-Kokubunji and Shin-Akitsu, tunnelling through the hills of Tokyo's northwestern fringe. In Saitama comes a run of interchanges with every radial trunk line — Minami-Urawa, Musashi-Urawa, Minami-Koshigaya — and Koshigaya-Laketown, home to one of Japan's largest shopping malls. Past Misato it crosses the Edo River into Chiba and finishes at Nishi-Funabashi.

Why play it

The station names lean hard on directional prefixes — Nishi-Urawa, Minami-Urawa and Higashi-Urawa arrive almost back to back. That makes this the easiest line in the game to fumble, and the ultimate accuracy test.

Line data

Everything below is derived from the station data the game runs on, so it always matches what you actually type on the 武蔵野線 — all 26 stops of it.

How much typing is this?

Typing every station name on this line takes 323 keystrokes, an average of 12.4 per station. The longest name is 越谷レイクタウン (koshigaya-laketown) at 19 keystrokes; the shortest is 新座 (niiza) at 5. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.

Along the way: 0 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 2 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 2 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.

Where you can change trains

12 of the 26 stations on this line connect to another line in the game. Follow any symbol to that line's guide.
