Overview
The Katamachi Line (H), marketed as the JR Gakkentoshi Line, runs 24 stations from Kizu to Kyobashi. The nickname comes from Kansai Science City, the research town it skirts between Kizu and Kyotanabe. It no longer reaches the station it is named after: Katamachi, one stop beyond Kyobashi, closed in 1997 when the JR Tozai Line opened.
Along the route
From Kizu in Nara Prefecture it passes Hosono, JR-Miyamaki and Doshishamae for the university campus, then Kyotanabe, before climbing over the hills at Matsuiyamate into Osaka Prefecture. Tsuda, Kawachi-Iwafune, Shijonawate and Suminodo bring it down to Hanaten, Shigino and Kyobashi. It shares the H numbering with the JR Tozai Line, and nearly every train runs through and finishes far to the west.
Why play it
Twenty-four stations of genuinely tricky readings — kawachi-iwafune, konoike-shinden, shijonawate — plus hanaten, whose kanji give away nothing at all. The line for testing your reading instincts.

How much typing is this?
Typing every station name on this line takes 223 keystrokes, an average of 9.3 per station. The longest name is 鴻池新田 (konoike-shinden) at 16 keystrokes; the shortest is 木津 (kizu) at 4. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.
Along the way: 0 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 4 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 4 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.
Where you can change trains
4 of the 24 stations on this line connect to another line in the game. Follow any symbol to that line's guide.
