Overview

The Hanwa Line (R) opened on 18 July 1929, was completed the following year, and was nationalised in 1944. Built by the private Hanwa Electric Railway, it runs 61.3 km and 35 stations from Tennoji down the western side of the Izumi plain to Wakayama, in orange.

Along the route

Past Nagai and Abikocho it enters Sakai, where Mikunigaoka and Mozu sit beside the Mozu kofun burial mounds and the vast tomb of Emperor Nintoku. Otori, Izumi-Fuchu and Higashi-Kishiwada carry it down the coastal plain to Hineno, the junction for Kansai Airport. Between Yamanakadani and Kii it climbs the Onoyama pass through the Izumi mountains — an 8.1 km gap, the line's longest — before dropping into Wakayama. Mozu, incidentally, is the only JR station whose kanji outnumber its kana.

Why play it

Thirty-five stations, among the most in the game, with izumi-, kii- and higashi- prefixes recurring just often enough to trip you up. Endurance and concentration in equal measure.

Line data

Everything below is derived from the station data the game runs on, so it always matches what you actually type on the 阪和線 — all 35 stops of it.

How much typing is this?

Typing every station name on this line takes 322 keystrokes, an average of 9.2 per station. The longest name is 東岸和田 (higashi-kishiwada) at 16 keystrokes; the shortest is 紀伊 (kii) at 3. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.

Along the way: 1 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 4 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 1 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.

Where you can change trains

4 of the 35 stations on this line connect to another line in the game. Follow any symbol to that line's guide.
