Overview

The JR Kyoto Line / JR Kobe Line (A) is one continuous stretch of the Tokaido Main Line under two nicknames JR West coined in 1988: Kyoto to Osaka is the Kyoto Line, Osaka onward to Kobe is the Kobe Line, with Osaka Station the boundary. The 33 stations here are the local-train stops, served on a separate pair of tracks from the famous Shin-Kaisoku rapids.

Along the route

South from Kyoto past Yamazaki and its whisky distillery, through the commuter cities of Takatsuki and Ibaraki, into Shin-Osaka for the Shinkansen and on to Osaka itself. West of there come Amagasaki, Koshienguchi for the baseball stadium, and the leafy Nishinomiya–Ashiya belt, before Rokkomichi, Nada and the finish at Sannomiya and Kobe.

Why play it

At 33 stations this is one of the longest commuter runs in the game, packed with mouthfuls like settsu-motoyama and koshienguchi. A genuine endurance test of both stamina and accuracy.

Line data

Everything below is derived from the station data the game runs on, so it always matches what you actually type on the JR京都線・JR神戸線 — all 33 stops of it.

How much typing is this?

Typing every station name on this line takes 308 keystrokes, an average of 9.3 per station. The longest name is 東淀川 (higashi-yodogawa) at 15 keystrokes; the shortest is 摩耶 (maya) at 4. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.

Along the way: 3 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 3 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 0 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.

Where you can change trains

5 of the 33 stations on this line connect to another line in the game. Follow any symbol to that line's guide.
