Overview

The Tokaido / Sanyo Shinkansen runs about 1,069 km from Tokyo to Hakata; the 35 stations here are those served by the through-running Nozomi and Hikari network. The two halves have different owners: the Tokaido section from Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, opened 1 October 1964, belongs to JR Central, and the Sanyo section on to Hakata, completed 10 March 1975, to JR West. There is no official station numbering, so the SK01–SK35 codes here were invented for this game.

Along the route

Tokyo, Shinagawa and Shin-Yokohama give way to Odawara and Atami, with Mount Fuji off to the right around Shin-Fuji. Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka are the great interchanges. Westward come Shin-Kobe, Himeji beneath its World Heritage castle, Okayama and Hiroshima, then the Kanmon tunnel off Honshu — the last two stops, Kokura and Hakata, are JR West track on Kyushu soil.

Why play it

Thirty-five stations spanning two islands, thick with long names like shin-yokohama, mikawa-anjo and shin-shimonoseki. The biggest run in the game, and the one that really feels like crossing Japan.

Line data

Everything below is derived from the station data the game runs on, so it always matches what you actually type on the 東海道・山陽新幹線 — all 35 stops of it.

How much typing is this?

Typing every station name on this line takes 308 keystrokes, an average of 8.8 per station. The longest name is 東広島 (higashi-hiroshima) at 16 keystrokes; the shortest is 厚狭 (asa) at 3. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.

Along the way: 0 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 3 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 0 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.

Where you can change trains

3 of the 35 stations on this line connect to another line in the game. Follow any symbol to that line's guide.

Marked with a star: 東京・品川 — the major interchanges, which the maps always label and the game marks with a heavier arrival stamp.
