Overview
The Tozai Line (T) is Kyoto's east-west crossing and the younger of the two subway lines, opened in 1997 and extended to Uzumasa-Tenjingawa in 2008. Its 17 stations cover about 17.5 km from Uzumasa-Tenjingawa in the west to Rokujizo in the southeast. Keihan's Keishin Line trains through-run onto it from Misasagi, and every station on the line has platform screen doors — a first for a Japanese subway when it opened.
Along the route
The western half is a straight shot under Oike-dori: Uzumasa-Tenjingawa, Nishioji-Oike, Nijo (transfer to JR's Sagano Line), Nijojo-mae beside the castle, Karasuma Oike where the Karasuma Line crosses, and Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae by the city hall. Sanjo Keihan and Higashiyama put you at the foot of the sightseeing district, then Keage climbs past the old Incline before the line burrows under the hills to Misasagi. From Yamashina it swings south through Higashino, Nagitsuji, Ono and Daigo — Daigo-ji's stop — and ends at Ishida and Rokujizo.
Why play it
This is the harder of Kyoto's two lines to read. Nagitsuji uses 椥, a kanji you will meet nowhere else in the game; Misasagi is written 御陵 but read misasagi, not goryo; and Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae is nine morae of officialese. Between them sit easy wins like Ono and Daigo, so the rhythm keeps breaking — which is exactly what makes it good practice.

Typing every station name on this line takes 164 keystrokes, an average of 9.6 per station. The longest name is 京都市役所前 (kyoto-shiyakusho-mae) at 19 keystrokes; the shortest is 小野 (ono) at 3. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.
Along the way: 0 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 4 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 1 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.
