Overview
The Jubilee line is the Underground's newest, and it shows. Opened in 1979 and named for the Queen's Silver Jubilee two years earlier, it took over an existing branch to Stanmore and then, in 1999, gained the Jubilee Line Extension east to Stratford — a run of cathedral-scale concrete stations with platform edge doors, built to serve Canary Wharf and the Millennium Dome. Its 27 stations cover about 36 km.
Along the route
The line starts in the suburbs at Stanmore and drops south-east through Wembley Park and Neasden, picking up Willesden Green, Kilburn and Finchley Road on the way in. Baker Street and Bond Street bring it into the West End, then Green Park, and at Westminster it turns hard east and follows the river: Waterloo, Southwark, London Bridge, Bermondsey, Canada Water, Canary Wharf.
That eastern half is the Extension, and it is where the line stops feeling like the rest of the Tube. North Greenwich, Canning Town, West Ham and Stratford finish the run.
In this game it meets the Bakerloo line at Baker Street and Waterloo, and the Victoria line at Green Park.
Why play it
27 stations makes this the longest London run here, but the average name is the shortest of the three — 11 keystrokes. Most of it is short, hard words: Kilburn, Neasden, Bermondsey, Southwark. The trap is the suburban opening, where Stanmore, Canons Park, Queensbury and Kingsbury arrive in a block and none of them are the one you are expecting. Get through the first six and the rest of the line runs fast.
