Overview
The Bakerloo line is the old one. It opened in 1906 as the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway, and the name is a newspaper contraction of those two stations that stuck so hard it became official. Its 25 stations run about 23 km from Harrow & Wealdstone in the north-west down to Elephant & Castle in the south — much of the northern half shared with the London Overground on tracks that are older than the Tube itself. Its 1972 Stock trains are the oldest still in passenger service on the Underground.
Along the route
The northern end is overground and suburban: Harrow & Wealdstone, Kenton, Wembley Central, Stonebridge Park, Harlesden. The line ducks underground around Queen's Park and threads Maida Vale and Warwick Avenue before reaching Paddington. Then it climbs through Edgware Road, Marylebone and Baker Street, turns south at Regent's Park, and runs the spine of the West End: Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Charing Cross, Embankment. Waterloo, Lambeth North and Elephant & Castle close it out south of the river.
This is the line that ties the London network together in this game: it meets the Victoria line at Oxford Circus, and the Jubilee at both Baker Street and Waterloo.
Why play it
The Bakerloo has the heaviest keystroke count of the three London lines at 320, and it is front-loaded — the suburban north gives you Harrow & Wealdstone (21 keystrokes, with an ampersand you type as "and"), Stonebridge Park and Willesden Junction before you have settled in. Two names carry apostrophes, Queen's Park and Regent's Park, and both are optional to type. Survive the top half and the West End run is a sprint of familiar, short names.
