Overview

The Sobu (Rapid) / Yokosuka Line (JO) has run as a single through service since 1980, joining beneath Tokyo Station to link Chiba in the north with Kurihama in the south — roughly 110 km and 28 stations. JR East numbers the whole thing as one continuous JO line, and its navy-and-cream trains form a long-haul commuter spine across Chiba, Tokyo and Kanagawa.

Along the route

From Chiba the line runs west through Funabashi and Ichikawa, dives underground at Kinshicho, and reaches Tokyo Station's platforms some thirty metres below the surface via Bakurocho and Shin-Nihombashi. Back in daylight it heads south through Shimbashi, Shinagawa, Musashi-Kosugi, Yokohama, Totsuka and Ofuna. The finale is the best part: old-capital Kita-Kamakura and Kamakura, the naval town of Yokosuka, and the Miura Peninsula coast at Kurihama.

Why play it

Twenty-eight stations strung across three utterly different worlds — deep central Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kamakura — with readings that shift in character from Kinshicho to Kita-Kamakura to Kurihama.

How much typing is this?

Typing every station name on this line takes 247 keystrokes, an average of 8.8 per station. The longest name is 新日本橋 (shin-nihombashi) at 15 keystrokes; the shortest is 田浦 (taura) at 5. Those counts come from running each name's kana through the game's own romaji engine, so they are what your fingers actually do — not the length of the printed spelling.

Along the way: 0 names contain a small っ, which doubles the next consonant; 3 contain a small ゃ, ゅ or ょ, where the engine accepts both the Hepburn and Kunrei spellings (sha or sya, shu or syu); and 0 end in ん, whose trailing n folds into whatever comes next rather than standing alone.

Where you can change trains

21 of the 28 stations on this line connect to another line in the game. Follow any symbol to that line's guide.

Marked with a star: 品川・新橋・東京 — the major interchanges, which the maps always label and the game marks with a heavier arrival stamp.
